The L.A. Stars travelled to Salzburg on Sunday for a late-afternoon contest with the RedBulls. The Stars, fresh from their last-weekend defeat of Villach, were full of confidence and excited of the prospect of playing against the big Red Machine.  The excitement was short-lived, as just 58 seconds into the game, Salzburg opened the scoring, and never looked back, scoring six more times before the end of the period.  Bryce Fink took the loss, going the distance for the Stars.  RedBull held period leads of 7-0 and 10-0, before ending with the 12-1 win.  Dylan Weber scored the lone Stars goal, completing a great three-way passing play from Stefan Fellinger and Philipp Kreuzer.

From start to finish, Salzburg was clearly the bigger, faster team. “It was a great display of speed and skill; it’s the game we want to mimic even though we are the younger team, so we need to learn from this. When pondering why he left Fink in for the game, O’Leary laughed. “Left him in?  I gave him the choice after one, and told him ‘It’s your call. When you want to come out, let me know.’  Finker’s response was pretty clear. He told me he wanted the rest of the game. I thought about it, but he was right. He played a great game for us.”

“I think that we need to put this into perspective: our goal is to contend with that type of team, and this was a measuring stick we were looking for. This shows us where we want to be. Now, it’s a matter of working to get there.”

Next weekend, the Stars are once again on the road, as they travel to Klagenfurt for a tilt with Klagenfurter AC.
