The L.A. Stars started the 2010 portion of the season in a tough way, as the they hosted the Klagenfurt Athletic Club on Wednesday in St. Polten, fresh off of their Christmas break. The team struggled to find their timing and legs, falling 8-0 to the KAC group.  Taking the loss in the net was Johann Bauer, who showed well in the first and third period, but fell victim to a KAC team that was flying from the drop of the puck.
The first period was fairly even, with the short-staffed Stars' squad giving up one goal, while peppering the KAC goaltender, but being stymied on several occasions.
The second period was where the game became out of reach, as KAC found the net four times, building up a five nothing lead with a Stars' squad that looked out of gas and disoriented, playing without Fabio Kläy, Dylan Weber (coming back off of injury), as well as missing defensemen Jan Bernhardt and Gustaf Warnelius (both of whom arrived in the second period). The third period was simply too much too soon, as the Stars' were unable to keep up as they had not skated or practised since the the end of December.
"There isn't much you can say about that, as we really just didn't have it today. With the travel of some of these guys, the schedule of arriving... it was a really tough game for our guys. I think that we battled hard, but timing was off, conditioning was not at the level it was when they left... and at the end of the day, the guys tried hard, but just didn't have it. Sometimes that happens. I am just proud that they didn't quit or lose control. They really showed a lot of composure out there."
The schedule doesn't get any easier for the L.A. squad, as they travel to Vienna on Friday night, then off to Villach on Sunday. In the meantime, the Stars will also have the chance to take in the first "outdoor classic" game between the KAC and Villach teams from the Erste Bank Liga on Saturday.
