In a curious first period in which neither team wanted capitalize on the others mistakes, the Jr. Caps managed to score the Power play on a point shot that seemed to change directions beating goalie Bryce Fink to the glove side high. A number of good opportunities were missed by both teams after some poor defensive one on one play and soft giveaways by each team a Stefan Hrdina wrist shot from the top of the circle found the mesh inside the far post but to the dismay of the Star players and fans the officials saw no goal. A hard working but very unproductive L.A. Star side could not find the open man on their 5 on 4 opportunities and went into the first period still down by one. The second period started off with a gift for the home team after a weak defensive zone giveaway allowed the Jr. Cap player to walk in all alone from just inside the blue line and put the puck behind a helpless Star goalie with only eight seconds gone on the clock. To their credit the Stars clawed their way back and finally capitalized on the power play when Sam Antonitsch tapped in a nice goalmouth pass by Stephan Fellinger with Nikolaus Houben picking up the other helper. The 2 -1 goal seamed to rally the Stars who gained the upper hand for much of the period missing several point blank chances to equalize before Dylan Weber came in from the point on another Star power play to pounce on rebound and drive it into the back of the net to knot the game at two. A motivated L. A. Star group was unable to uncomplicate their game enough to take advantage of the numerous opportunities served up for them by the Caps and the teams remained tied going into the last period. In a very even period with both teams giving each other ample chances to take the lead it would be the Jr. Caps to score first again after a giveaway behind the net gave the Cap player a free pass to come around and jamb in the go ahead goal. Three minutes later it was the Caps who missed a clearing opportunity which Gustaf Warnelius intercepted and sent to Dylan Weber who passed to Fabio Kläy for the score. It was now a matter of who could take advantage of the others weaknesses and six minutes later Dylan Weber broke through behind the Caps defence on a pass from Kläy and Richter to notch his second of the night and give the Stars their first lead of the game. After the stars missed two breakaways which could have iced the game and Fink coming up big on a late shorthanded situation it seamed the Stars could ride it out for the win. In a harmless one on one rush with just one minute remaining the Cap player went in wide and found some room on the near post beating the surprised L.A. Star net minder for the goal to gain the Jr. Caps the tie. Overall it was an exciting game in which both teams deserved to split the points. We can look forward to the rematch this coming Saturday afternoon in St. Pölten where the teams again will have the chance to determine a winner. Add a comment |
