Jr. Varsity Earn Costly Point
October 29, 2011 - Vienna - It was a good news bad news sort of day for the Jr. Varsity. The first bad news for the week was that Defencemen Garrit Blume and Christoph Kitzenegger were sick the entire week and would not be able to play, the good news, Florian Baltram was back after his surgery to remove his appendix. The Capitals had all their injured players returning and you could see in warm up that they were ready. The Game started out with a bang and 60 minutes later it would end with the same intensity. A high tempo, hard hitting game saw both teams with chances. From a spectator standpoint it looked like a U20 game. The Refereee let the boys play for the most part and everyone in the arena was able to enjoy a great hockey game.
Emil Sztatecsny would open up the scoring with his first of the year on a great end to end rush with speed and a great finish. Florian Baltram in his first game back since the beginning of September made his presence felt banging in a Thomas Zitz rebound to give the Stars a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.
In the Second the Stars controlled most of the period but could not add to their lead. Vlad Rodnov would put one through the legs of the goalie but the puck dribbled past the post. The Capitals on the other hand took advantage of their chances. Marc Janisch cut the lead with a wrist shot to the far corner and in the last minute of the period on a low offensive zone turnover, the Capitals would counter. Unfortunately Nikolaus Hauer would catch an edge and and Caps sniper Patrick Kittinger could walk in alone to tie the game.
The Stars responded quickly in the third period scoring on the first shift. After some great battling by Cedric Irhuesogie, the puck would be picked up in the slot by Eduard Kusnetsov and blown past Tobias Cirter to give the Stars their lead back. Minutes later Nikita Zantmans would one time puck that rattled the post but would not bounce in. With 10 minutes to play the first sign of laziness would cost the Stars. After being caught out on the ice for two minutes Irhuesogie could not catch the opponent and was forced to hook him down. The caps responded with a Power Play goal to tie the game. A shot from the point deflected of Sebastian Huber in the high slot and would give Dieber no chance. The Stars continued to pressure and were the better team on this day. with 90 seconds left to play Baltram fired a shot from the slot again off the inside post and would jump dangerously in front of the goal line but again not bounce our way, and with only seconds remaining Vadim Berezhnoy would feed Cedric Irhuesogie once more but Cirter would make the last save of the game.
The Good News, the Jr. Varsity Start would earn a point....the Bad News, it was very costly as we lost Team Captain Emil Sztatecsny in the second period to a lower body injury and he will not be able to play the next game.
Coach Comments: I talked with Charles(Vienna Capitals Coach) after the game and we were both amazed by the speed of tonight's game, and the way both teams were able to keep up the physical aspect of the game. I'm sure that was our best game of the season so far, and I'm sure the boys had a lot of fun tonight. Both teams obviously love the body checking as you could hear the roars from both benches after every hit. It's amazing to see how good hockey can be when the Referee lets the kids play. There were only 3 penalties a side in the whole game. We've had a game with 89 penalty minutes for our team and one now with 6, and it\s prettty obvious to see which one is the better game. I have to also say big hats off today to Max Paczkowski, Hugo Jansons, Emil Sztatescsny, Thomas Zitz, Florian Baltram, Simon Wolf, Patrick Dieber, and Max Wehrhan. Our U15 team only had 5 or 6 players, so these 8 players actually played two games within 4 hours today. When you think of that and see their performances in the second game its good to see that our strength and conditioning program is making a difference.
