Stars Feast on Wolves
The Sunday afternoon matinee between the Prep Stars and the Tarco Wolves from Klagenfurt afternoon turned out to be a slaughter, as the Stars powerplay set the tone early and carried the lead throughout the entire game en route to a 12-1 won in U-20 league action at the Klenkdome. It also was the first win of the season for Eliah Knecht, who had to make a few key saves on the penalty kill for the Stars on the afternoon.
Albert Krammer opened the scoring on the powerplay for the Stars, as his shot from the point found its way past the Tarco goaltender off of a feed from Kläy and Schrӧder. It was then Nikolaus Houben pouncing on a Niki Kraus rebound on the powerplay (Richter) to extend the lead, before Jon Flamand’s point shot (Tomanek, Lazarevic) beat the Wolves goalie to extend the lead to three, with all three goals coming on the powerplay. Niki Kraus (Richter) and Stefan Hrdina (Evangelista, Poschmann) rounded out the first period scoring, both at even strength.
Fabian Tomanek scored on the first shift of the second period (Flamand, Lazarevic), and Marco Richter (Kraus, Wagner) also found twine to extend the lead to seven. The Wolves finally got on the board as a shot from an odd-angle somehow squeezed past Knecht, but that was the only puck that would elude the young Swiss netminder on the afternoon. After the lull, the Stars responded with Tomanek’s second of the night (Kläy, Schrӧder), aptly enough to end the second frame.
The Stars maintained the push in the third, as Zak Hicks notched his second of the season (Sebastian Rilk) with a wrister from the top of the right face-off circle. Flamand’s second powerplay marker of the game (Bernhardt, Wagner) gave the Stars double-digits, before Lazarevic (Flamand, Tomanek) and Daniel Leisser (Schrӧder, Hicks) rounded out the scoring.
The Stars continued their climb in the standings, with their sights set on catching the Vienna Capitals and cracking the top seven in the league. Next up for the Stars is a road-trip to Zell Am See on Sunday.
