Vienna Capitalizes in Third
12. Feb 2012
It was a Rough day back after the Semester Break. With players enjoying a little break away from school, that also meant a break from the ice. It’s not too often you play Games 8 days apart without a practice in between. The phone was ringing all day, players giving me updates that their train is late but they are on their way and should make the game. When it was time to leave for Vienna we had 12 players in the Vans and we raced off to the Austrian Capital.
The Caps awaited us and the first period was 20 minutes filled with mistakes by both teams. Eduard Kuznetsov scored both Stars goals but Vienne had 3 and the lead after one.
The second period was much better hockey. We ran into some penalty trouble but we did a great job in the shorthanded situations. The chances we had on the Power Play were few, in fact we had real trouble getting the puck set up. This night was more about opportunity. With half the team missing, many players were given opportunities to play different situations and different positions. With only 2 starting D in the lineup, others like Cedric Irhuesogie, Sebastian Huber, Eduard Kuznetsov, Vlad Rodnov, and Daniil Ovchinnikov were taking shifts on Defense. On one play we lost two of our D to the penalty box, but again others stepped up and got the job done. There was no scoring in the second period.
The third period and our Top Defenseman Stefan Boskovic who was so proud of his new skates but wore his old skates instead broke his skate blade on his second shift of the third. He left his new skates at home, so now we were down to 1 starting D. Four minutes in it was a race back to our zone for a loose puck which the Vienna player would win a rip a shot that would find the five hole and give the Caps a 2 goal lead. The week break was not our best friend, in the last 5 minutes of the game it seemed every bounce, rebound or deflection would find a Capital stick. They added 5 goals to make the score 8-2. A good game for 55 minutes and 5 minutes of are you kidding me. Good news is we have practice before our next game.
