On a rare Friday evening meeting, the LA Junior Varsity Stars hosted the Vienna Capitals. 19:45 was the opening face off and everyone was awaiting a high intensity game. The last meeting between the two clubs came down to a last second penalty shot which Dominik Dieber stopped to give the Stars the edge, on this night the Penalty Shot would once again be a highlight of the night.
It was a penalty filled game, the problem was we were the only team getting the penalties. The first period we were given 14 minutes in penalties and did a great job killing them off. But 13 minutes in the caps would beat Richard Albrecht to take a 1-0 lead into the dressing room. The second was much the same another 14 minutes in penalties and again we killed like champions. It was tough for the boys not to get frustrated at some of the calls. Mark Flamand was given two minutes for kneeing even though the opponent was almost 2 m away from him and he never even came close to touching him..( Regel 536 - Check mit dem Knie (Kneeing) Ein Spieler der einen Gegenspieler mit dem Knie checkt, erhaelt nach Ermessen den Schiedsrichters eine: Kleine Strafe oder Grosse Strafe oder Matchstrafe.)
Emil Sztatecsny was given two minutes for delay of game even though the puck went off the glass before going out of play, and after discussion with the referee, he believed that still to be a penalty. The most frustrating part of the second period that really kiilled us was when the Third goal from the Capitals was given even though the net was clearly off its original position before the puck crossed the line. Although I still consider it a huge advantage to know the rules, it can also be very frustrating at times, especially when the boys keep asking how can that happen? But after the second I once again told the boys that the referees are not in their control and not to worry about them and to focus on just playing. The Stars came out flying and again while shorthanded, Florian Baltram would make a steal and bury a backhander up to the top corner to make it 3-1. The pressure was on, but we couldn't get one past the Goalie. 5 minutes later on a delayed penalty the Caps would squeeze one through the legs of Albrecht. But that didn't stop the Stars who kept coming and less than a minute later Thomas Zitz made a great move through the legs of the defender and then blew a shot past the goalie to make it 4-2. With ten minutes still to play the Stars continued their attack but time and time again not being rewarded. Then more penalties that took away our momentum. Then with 1 minute left in the game the highlight of the night. The caps were awarded a penalty shot when Thomas Zitz covered the puck in the goal crease. Although the game was pretty much over, the highlight of a penalty shot got both benches and the fans on their feet. It would be Richard Albrecht who would be the winner in this mini contest making a great save on the Penalty Shot. Albrecht was pulled for the final minute as we continued to pressure the opponents net. To no avail, the final buzzer sounded and the LA surge that started too late was over. The caps would go home with 2 points in the bank. The Stars were not given one Power Play chance in the game, but did a great job killing giving up only one goal with 36 minutes in penalties and a penalty shot. It was a great third period but as we learned already this year, it is very hard to win a game if you only win one period.
